Artist Statement

As I learn more about the amazing world of glass each day, I am inspired to try new techniques and colors that constantly inspire me. I flame-work borosilicate glass starting with sized rods and tubes of different colors. Using a variety of techniques, I manipulate the glass into the desired shapes and designs.
Born and raised in Virginia, Minnesota, the north woods have always played a significant role in my life. My goal as a glass artist and as a life philosophy is to learn as much as I can from as many sources as possible. I find inspiration in the palette of the outdoors and often try to emulate this in glass. I am also inspired by the medium itself, the act of working with glass in its natural state. In its molten form, glass looses its fragility, and becomes something I can control. By shaping, stretching, and blowing I get to bring it to life. New colors are constantly immerging and the thrill of working new colors or new techniques keeps me coming back for more. When creating a work, I strive to use techniques that will foster a sense of awe in those who view my art. I want them to ask, “Is that a stone… that looks like it never ends! Is that a real flower in there?” These comments are measurable outcomes that confirm my objectives.

I intend to enroll in class from such masters as Marcel Braun, Robert Mickelsen, Roger Parrimore and Cesare Toffolo. I find inspiration in the outdoors and often try to recreate natural items from glass. I am also Inspired by the art itself. New colors are constantly immerging and the thrill of trying new colors or techniques keeps me coming back for more. My dedication to torch time is my biggest asset. I know the more time I spend practicing, the easier techniques and creativeness will come.
